Health Insurance Blog - Commerce ISD Police K9 receives health insurance grant
The four-legged member of the Commerce Independent School District's Police Department is more protected now, as the department recently received a grant for health insurance for its K9 unit.
Coco, a pit bull who is a former shelter dog, has served with CISD PD since January of this year, and has become a local superstar in the process. CISD PD officer Dave Contreras says that Coco now has health insurance thanks to a non-profit organization.
Vested Interest in K9s, based in Massachusetts, recently awarded the police department with a “Healthcare for K9 Heroes” grant to cover Coco's health insurance. Contreras says that it functions much like health insurance for humans, covering the costs for illnesses, injuries, diagnostic testing and therapy.
“The Commerce Veterinary Clinic already offers us preventative care, food and boarding, which we are greatly appreciative of,” Contreras said. “But this will definitely supplement what we already get and make sure Coco is protected.”
The grant covers one year of premiums through the insurance company Trupanion. The grant was in effect starting Oct. 1.
VIK9s also provides bullet and stab protective vests to K9 units. Coco was a recipient of a vest from this organization earlier this year..
Both Contreras and CISD PD Chief Joe Venable lauded the work Coco has done not just in her official capacities, but as an ambassador for her breed.
"She has been very well loved by the students and the community since she arrived, and she also has a deterrent effect for those trying to bring illicit substances on campus," Contreras said. “But in addition, she is a positive ambassador for pit bulls. She is sweet and kind to so many people."
